After a three-year fight with cancer, my brother-in-law, Rick Murray, passed away last week. He was only years-old. The first is simply because I like to have an archive of my writing. The second, more important reason, is that I feel as a society we are really bad at dealing with death. When I went looking for inspiration for his eulogy, I was aghast at the crass websites I found. Thankfully a friend of mine had posted a eulogy he wrote for his father.

Eulogy For A Brother

I wrote this eulogy for my mother-in-law about two weeks before she passed. Thankfully she got to read this and hopefully understand my deep love for her. I wanted to post it here today because like all of us who lose a loved one, I miss her. She is sixty-three years old and dying prematurely from ALS. Her final months are upon us, and although I am a Registered Nurse and have counseled many people through grief, I am finding it nearly impossible to begin my own grieving process.

We are gathered here today in the memory of my brother, Darrell, so that together we may acknowledge and share both our joy in the gift that his life was to us, and the pain that his passing brings. It was a tough course! I loved the way the teacher explained everything so clearly with good examples.
