Letter to the Editor: Silage manuscripts in the Journal of Dairy Science
Graduate Program Application Process | Animal Science
Holding a one day old kitten with a mangled leg is just one of many times when I felt certain I wanted to devote my life to animals. Through volunteering with animals and studying sciences at A-level, I realised that I am fascinated by scientific research and Bioveterinary Science. I find myself continually inspired by discoveries; for example, veterinarians had been familiar with Alarm Bradycardia for centuries before cardiologists recently understood it as Takotsubo Cardiomyopathy in humans. My interest in science developed from a young age as I watched science programmes, played educational games and read magazines such as "21 Wiek"; this was noticed by my teachers and rewarded with the Prize for Excellence In Mathematics and Science after GCSEs.

Most university courses, from undergraduate degrees onwards, expect a fair bit from applicants. Not only does each course have set academic requirements and forms to fill out; most applicants will also be asked to provide examples of their work, a CV, and even undertake special course-specific preparatory exams. Many masters courses — especially some very competitive ones, like the top MBA s — encourage applicants to obtain letters of recommendation from senior colleagues or academic supervisors.
If you would like to be involved in its development let us know. The elaboration of a compelling scientific case is an essential prerequisite for justifying the use of animals. Over the past few years there have been a number of important initiatives that have been aimed at raising the sometimes inadequate standard of reporting of animal experiments in the scientific literature. These criteria address a range of issues relating to transparency and validity of experimental design, the avoidance or minimisation of bias and the adequacy of statistical aspects of the study including statistical power and appropriate statistical analysis. In light of these initiatives MRC has revised and updated its guidelines on what information needs to be provided to allow proper evaluation of the scientific strengths and weaknesses of applications for funding involving animal use.
